Abstract
The wartime diary of a retired Yarraville railwayman and the memoir of a schoolboy son of an Armadale engineer reveal the class and religious tensions that divided the Melbourne home front 1914-18, and informed enlistment levels and patterns of voting in the 1916-17 conscription plebiscites.
