Design optimisation of auxetic composite structures under blast loading

Abstract

Novel advanced manufacturing and material fabrication techniques led to the development of smart and lightweight composite panels. These novel sandwich panels can be used in a large number of different applications (e.g. in defense, civil, and aerospace sectors). Moreover, their effectiveness in extreme scenarios (e.g. blasts, impacts and fires) is a critical topic currently under study. In particular, this paper explores the design of a lightweight auxetic (negative Poisson’s ratio) structure and its behaviour under blast loading.
