Abstract

Techniques to nanoengineer the surface properties of thin films are vital to the development of materials for advanced applications in areas such as energy, biomedicine, and optics. The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique is a premier approach to design thin films as it is simple, versatile, and offers precise control over properties of the films produced. Recently, this technique has been applied to the synthesis of hollow capsules that have application in sensing and drug delivery. Hollow capsules are prepared by the assembly of a nanostructured film on a sacrificial colloidal template, followed by core removal.
