Abstract
Objective: Hypertensive retinopathy is a sign of target organ damage (TOD) from chronically elevated blood pressure (BP). It is not known if these signs are present in patients with suspect hypertension. We compared the retinal vascular signs (including hypertensive retinopathy) in normotensive, suspect and true hypertensive individuals. Design and Methods: We recruited 20 suspect, 30 true hypertensive and 30 normotensive. All were age- and gender-matched. Suspect hypertension was defined as clinic BP≥140/90mmHg but average 24-hour ambulatory BP≤140/80mmHg. True hypertension had clinic and 24-hour ambulatory BP≥140/90mmHg. Hypertensive retinopathy signs (e.g. cotton-wool spots) and retinal v..
