Abstract
Some cases of adenocarcinoma of the gastro-esophageal junction are associated with Barrett's esophagus or columnar lined esophagus (CLE) which is a premalignant condition. To determine whether all adenocarcinomas arising in CLE differ from adenocarcinomas arising from the gastric cardia (CG) without Barrett's columnar changes the mucin characteristics of these tumours were compared. Similarly, the characteristics of the patients with the tumours, the finding at surgery, the pathological findings, the treatment offered and the overall survival were compared in carcinoma from CLE and CG. All clinical and biological features of the two types of cancers were similar suggesting the possibility th..
