Abstract

This chapter discusses the forces acting on the hoof (hoof biomechanics) that may be relevant to the development or treatment of laminitis. The underlying causes of laminitis may be divided into two categories: those with a biochemical or physiological basis; and those with a direct mechanical cause. Attention is focused on the first category that is, laminitis associated with biochemical changes in the lamellar junction. There are three major sources of loading for any joint. The first type of load is due primarily to the body weight and acts directly through the bones of the joint where they meet (the joint reaction force). The second type of load derives from the effects of any muscles th..
