Abstract

Productivity growth and genetic improvement in the wool industry is low compared to other agricultural industries. A wool industry taskforce in Victoria recently recommended to the Victorian Minister for Agriculture that "resources be directed to the assessment and demonstration of advanced genetic techniques aimed at improving the profitability of the Merino flock". This article outlines two potential ways in which DNA testing could be used to assist genetic improvement. First, we describe how DNA testing can provide accurate pedigree information which can be used as a basis for making sound selection decisions.
