Abstract

The problem of reconstructing an evolutionary order from various taxonomic criteria may be thought of as specifying a computer program or evolution function e that takes as input the taxonomic orders based on the criteria and produces a single composite evolutionary order as output. We specify four conditions that any such e should satisfy. Taken separately the conditions seem reasonable but taken together they are inconsistent. © 1978.
