Abstract

Study objectives - To document changes in smoking style around infants over time and to identify factors associated with the smoking hygiene of mothers and others. Design - A population based cohort study. Setting - Population based, involving 22% of live births in Tasmania, Australia. Participants - From 1 May 1988 to 30 April, 1993, 6109 infants and their mothers (89% of eligible infants) participated in the hospital and home interview of the cohort study. Infants eligible for cohort entry were those assessed at birth to be at a higher risk of SIDS.
