Mass transfer to freely moving drops

Abstract

Overall mass transfer coefficients for individual droplets have been obtained for the MIBK/HAC/water system in a “single file” droplet column. Dispersed phase film coefficients were also obtained for the presaturated MIBK/water system using tritiated water as solute. Results indicate that for the systems studied, the coefficient is initially strongly time dependant, decreasing from a high value and becoming relatively constant after the drop traverses a distance of 15 to 30 cm; this is several times the distance required to attain the terminal velocity. The results show that useful data can only be obtained from single file columns by conducting experiments over a full range of heights. © 19..
