Abstract

In this chapter we have tried to link together the optical effects occurring in metallic systems with those in semiconductor systems. The reasons for their different optical properties have been outlined, and examples provided to illustrate important optical effects observed in nanoparticulate systems. Hopefully, these results amply demonstrate that spectroscopic measurements, particularly surface plasmon absorption, may help in the interpretation of electron transfer experiments in both nanosized, semiconducting and metallic particle systems. © 1997, Elsevier Science & Technology
