Abstract

The Teatro Solís in Montevideo (Uruguay) is the oldest continuously operating opera house in the Americas. Inaugurated in 1856 with Verdi's Ernani, it soon became part of the South American circuit of grand theatres and a major stop for touring opera companies. Over nearly one and a half centuries it has served as Uruguay's premier theatre and it has been visited by world-renowned figures such as Adelina Patti, Arturo Toscanini, Enrico Caruso, Richard Strauss, Artur Rubinstein, and Vaslav Nijinsky.
