Fecal blood levels in health and disease: a study using HemoQuant.
N Engl J Med | Published : 1986
To the Editor: Ahlquist et al. (May 30 issue)1 reported on the use of HemoQuant as a technique for improving occult-blood testing for the detection of colorectal cancer. In an accompanying editorial,2 Peterson and Fordtran pointed to a number of shortcomings in the study. They also stated that the whole concept of testing for occult blood in stool as part of a screening program is “controversial and as yet unproved.” This cautious statement is in contrast to the widespread use of the Hemoccult test and the general judgment in the literature.
