Abstract

This chapter explores various aspects of that interface by examining the principles and methods used in both recording from and stimulation of neural tissue. It also reviews the principles and techniques required to record neural activity. The chapter further discusses functional imaging techniques, the current trend in examining the activity within neural tissue of the central nervous system (CNS). Neural stimulators employ different electrode configurations in order to excite neural tissue. Two popular clinical stimulation modes are monopolar and bipolar stimulation. In monopolar stimulation, a current is passed between an electrode in close proximity to the tissue being stimulated and a l..
