The REFRESH trial is an investigator-initiated and publically funded 'common good' research trial. As such, there is no commercial sponsorship. In addition to substantial institutional support from the participating hospitals, grant funding has been obtained from the Emergency Medicine Foundation (formerly the Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation) to support laboratory processing costs and research nurse hours (EMSS-229R24-2015-KEIJZERS). A separate funding application to the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council will be submitted in 2017 in order to complete the laboratory work that comprises the mechanistic arm of the trial.
