Abstract
There are increasing social pressures for changes in the Indonesian economic policy and for greater integration into the world economy. These have arisen from the need to become export competitive in non-oil products and to attract foreign direct investment. Deregulation is underway to meet these needs, but the precise outcomes are not clear because of the complex struggle of interests and ideas involved in the process. The major actors in the struggle are advocates of laissez-faire economics, proponents of state-led industrial nationalism, and populist nationalists who emphasize equity in the distribution of national wealth. © 1993, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
