Abstract
The commentaries span a range of paradigmatic approaches to human memory with a correspondingly diverse set of research questions, methodologies, and terminology for describing findings. After reviewing the challenges to the validity and utility of our approach, our conclusion remains that task specification is a valid and useful level of memory theorizing and can provide a bridge between the diverse paradigms. © 1994, Cambridge University Press.
