Abstract
An overview is given on calculations which demonstrate that solitons and vortices can be created by Bragg reflection of a condensate in an optical lattice. The analysis involves numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a rubidium atom condensate in a three-dimensional harmonic trap. The parameters of the condensate, optical lattice, and trap are all taken into account.
