Abstract

The depressor response elicited by unilateral low intensity electrical stimulation of the rat ventral medial prefrontal cortex may be mediated by a connection with the solitary tract nucleus. We tested this hypothesis by (i) examining the influence of medial prefrontal cortex stimulation on the induction of Fos-like immunoreactivity in neurons in the medulla oblongata, and (ii) by testing the effect of inhibition of solitary tract nucleus neurons on the medial prefrontal cortex stimulation-evoked depressor response. Depressor responses (>10 mmHg) were elicited by electrical stimulation of the medial prefrontal cortex every minute for 1 h ('Stimulated' group). Control animals were treated ide..
