HIGH-DISPERSION POLARIZATION-LABELED SPECTRUM OF I-2

The initial states of a group of neighboring transitions in I//2 are asymmetrically saturated by a circularly-polarized laser pulse. The resulting polarization-labelled spectrum is recorded photographically from the transmission of a second, counterpropagating broadband laser pulse with the sample enclosed by crossed polarizers. Transitions registered in the polarization-labelled spectrum arise from, at most, a few selected values of J in the initial state and so are sparse in comparison with the regular absorption spectrum.
