Abstract
Objective: No previous publications report on the results of the formation of a stoma in patients with severe constipation. The aim of this study was to determine whether the formation of a stoma was beneficial in these patients. Design and setting: All patients treated with a stoma for severe idiopathic constipation between 1973 and 1989 at St Mark's Hospital, London, UK were studied. Patients: The notes of all patients (n = 39) (median age 36 years) were reviewed and all but one patient could be interviewed at the end of follow-up (median 3 years).
