Velocity field for the punch problem for dilatant granular materials

Abstract

For the problem of indentation of a granular half-space by a smooth rigid punch, an alternative velocity field is obtained for shear-index yield functions, which is fully consistent with the dilatant double-shearing theory proposed for granular materials. The velocity field presented in (1), which although a bonafide solution of the governing equations, assumes that the flow is tangential to the bounding slip-line separating the deforming and rigid regions.
