Abstract

In many industrial processes involving rolling cylinders in contact, knowledge of the contact pressure in the nip region is often crucial to a proper understanding of the process. For small contact areas (angles), the Hertzian contact pressure usually provides an adequate description. However, for rubber-covered rolling cylinders in contact with either a metal cylinder or another rubber-covered cylinder, the contact area can be significant. Limited experimental evidence for an extremely thin rubber cover indicates that the contact pressure is non-Hertzian. Here we consider the case of an elastic cylinder which is symmetrically compressed by two rigid frictionless compressors which are themse..
