Abstract

After one of the world's most devastating earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis killed 170,000 Indonesians and made 500,000 homeless, a prominent international aid agency completed two new housing settlements in Banda Aceh. These villages are similar in their spatial layouts and use identical house designs. Despite some anxiety about the longer-term ownership of their houses, many households in both communities continue to add to their houses and make a series of incremental improvements.Given that these two villages are so similar in their formal layout, an analysis of both communities allows us to focus on the role location plays in determining the resident's capacity for recovery.
