A technique for the detection of low amplitude waveforms in the terminal QRS complex (late potentials) from the surface electrocardiogram, is described. The technique involves simultaneous recording and digitizing from three body surface electrocardiographic leads, signal averaging using a cross correlation method (whereby the whole QRS complex is used as the fiducial timing point) and highpass filtering (using a bi-directional filter to eliminate filter ringing). Signal averaged parameters such as the duration of the filtered vector magnitude, terminal QRS amplitude and duration of low amplitude waveforms are measured by computer algorithms.
