Research into music as a therapeutic medium for newborn infants originated with the physiological benefits of recorded music for prematurely born infants. However the clinical music therapy programs embrace a broad range of theoretical and practical principles. This chapter provides two frameworks for conceptualizing the application of music with premature and medically fragile newborn infants in hospital. Within the frameworks, a series of models will illuminate the theories, evidentiary basis and clinical practice of creating a therapeutic intervention to support the emerging needs of the hospitalized infant and his 1 family.
