Simulated patients as teachers: The role of feedback

Abstract

Simulated patients (SPs) often, although not always, provide feedback through a faculty-led debriefing process. This chapter commences with an overview of various aspects of SPs' feedback, with particular emphasis on the ways in which SPs can support learners in improving their patient-centred care. This feedback is then explored within the context of broader debriefing practices. The role of the SP in debriefing is discussed here. In SP-based education, the facilitator and SP may offer feedback verbally, via rating forms, or by a combination of each. Video-assisted debriefing (VAD) refers to the use of video in debriefing.
