Abstract

This chapter addresses two important elements for working within simulated patient (SP) methodology: scenario development and training for role portrayal. These elements belong primarily in the 'preparation' phase. The terms 'scenarios' and 'cases' are used interchangeably to describe the educational and clinical contexts, which form the simulation encounter. The chapter distinguishes the SP role of portraying a specific patient from the scenario. Planned scenarios are commonly used in SP-based education, although improvised scenarios are also possible.
