Abstract

The generation of adult cell types via the directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells has now been successful for a number of specific tissue types. A capacity to generate such pluripotent stem cells from adult somatic cells, and hence theoretically deliver an autologous therapy, is poised to represent the most important advance in medicine since organ transplantation. This approach has now been successful in the generation of kidney cell types, including progenitors capable of differentiating into multiple cell types within the nephron, as well as the epithelium of the collecting duct system. In this chapter, we will overview these advances and their potential application in d..
