Abstract

Some experiments are reported that provide more 'molecular' evidence concerning the thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate), and that demonstrate a new method for obtaining information about reactions of this type. To compare the relative importance of two modes of degradation, a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and methyl d//5-methacrylate was prepared and the thermally reconstituted monomer was examined by mass spectrometry to see whether it resulted from depropagation (d//0 and d//5 monomer) or depolymerization (some d//2 and d//3 monomer).
