ROUTLEDGE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK OF THE ARTS AND EDUCATION | ROUTLEDGE | Published : 2015
Abstract
One of the aims of this book is to provide insight into the breadth and range of the field of arts and education. In order to advance that view, it is important not to be constrained by dichotomies that have sometimes narrowed thinking in the past, e.g. between instrumental and intrinsic justification, learning in and through the arts, relativist and elitist notions of art, high and low art, formalist and populist approaches to pedagogy, individual and collective accounts. The need for breadth of vision is re-emphasised in this section by considering perspectives that are sometimes ignored.
