Researching the arts

Abstract

This section provides insight into both the challenge of conducting empirical research in arts education and using arts as a form of research. The section does not attempt to provide a summary of research in the field; it would have been unrealistic to try to address every art form and generic issue. Other chapters in the book draw on relevant research in relation to specific topics. It also was not appropriate to provide a summary of research on the impact of the arts on academic achievement. This has been the focus of many empirical enquiries and several useful summaries have already been published.
