Abstract

The chapters in this section use historical perspectives to illuminate the issues they address. The aim was not to provide detailed linear histories of either the arts or arts education. To do so would have necessitated creating artificial limitations, for example by either restricting arts education to schooling or by addressing a very limited range of cultural contexts. These is arguably no such thing as a history but multiple interpretations of events; any history makes selections and categorises the world in particular ways. The chapters in this section integrate insights from history into their accounts of broader ideas and concepts.
