Abstract
The authors predict specular transmission density and granularity of processed monodisperse photographic emulsions using the Nutting formula modified to include the effect of light-scattering. The modification are based on the Mie theory of scattering of electromagnetic radiation. Consideration of the Mie theory in the single scattering approximation leads to expressions for the optical density and granularity in terms of the effective extinction efficiency of the filamentary silver grains. Application to the experimental coatings of E. A. Trabka and E. C. Doerner yields good agreement between theory and experiment for emulsions with low to moderate concentrations of grains.
