Monoclonal antibodies (MCA) and hybridoma technology have a powerful influence on contemporary immunology: time will place this and the enthusiasm surrounding it into perspective. In this restricted and selected review, an attempt has been made to highlight some of the visible trends in the development and use of MCA. The value of MCA has been demonstrated already in experimental immunochemistry and, as yet to a lesser extent, in immunobiology. In situations where large amounts of homogeneous antibodies are needed, MCA produced in hybrid lymphocytes will offer unparalleled opportunities for laboratory experimentation and standardization and for clinical investigation.
