Abstract

Collaborative writing, the co-authorship of a text by two or more writers, provides L2 learners with opportunities for language learning and learning to write. These activities are particularly suitable for EAP writing classes, preparing students for group writing tasks that they are likely to encounter in their courses and the workplace. In this chapter I discuss and suggest guidelines for key decisions in the design and implementation of successful collaborative writing activities in EAP classes. I focus in particular on the choice of writing tasks, factors to consider when grouping students, and how to assess students’ contribution to the collaborative writing activity.
