Translation as a material practice

As an artist I am interested in giving material form to images found in literary texts. I consider these translations. I discuss two projects: A video work of Utako Shindo, translating a philosophical text, but embroidering with her memories; and a project based on the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon. A quotation from Chris Marker’s 1983 film Sans Soleil, framed this project: “He spoke to me of Sei Shonagon, a lady in waiting to Princess Sadako at the beginning of the 11th century, in the Heian period.
