Diagnosis and management of choroidal melanoma

Abstract

We present a case report of a 40-year-old man with a malignant melanoma of the choroid. Systemic medical evaluation showed no evidence of metastases. Treatment with argon laser photocoagulation was ineffective in producing tumour reduction and resulted in the complications of uveitis, retinal vascular leakage and cystoid macular oedema. Treatment was altered to plaque irradiation with substantial regression of the tumour. We review the differential diagnosis and management of choroidal melanoma with reference to the current literature and to other cases.
