This chapter discusses the strong conservative elements within Australian culture during the 1930s who stood firmly against the emergence of the new modernist culture then dominating the life of mainstream cosmopolitan cities from Paris and London to New York and Shanghai. These folk who included many artists in their ranks, were for the classical values of the pastoral and fought against the changes which modern technologies were bringing to Australian industrial life and culture.
