Tissue engineering aims to grow replacement tissues for the human body to treat patients with missing or not fully functional tissues due to conditions including genetic defects, trauma and disease. A key aspect of the clinical application of this process is provision of the blood supply, the province of the plastic surgeon. This chapter provides and overview of the definition, historical and current context for tissue engineering with a focus on applications relevant to plastic surgery.
