Abstract
State and civil society in India: collaboration and contestation? With its immense diversity and divisions along religious, caste, class, and a multitude of other lines, India is perhaps an unlikely place for democracy to take root. But the fact that it is one of the few post- colonial societies to have almost continually managed to elect its government and leaders through the ballot makes it a rare success story.
