Large horizontal recti recession for treatment of congenital nystagmus long term results

Abstract

Reduction of Nystagmus Amplitude has been shown to improve vision and recession of 4 horizontal Recti has been shown to reduce nystagmus amplitude. Sixty five patients underwent recession of the 4 horizontal recti to the equator between 1988-2000. Postoperative vision was measured with snellen acuity, subjective questioning and in 6 patients with assessment of recognition time. Ten patients had ENG and fovaetion characteristics evaluated. 55 patients had improved vision, 8 had no change and 2 reported subjective reduction in vision. 14 patients required a second surgery, but all retained the benefits of surgery.
