Abstract

Psychological essentialism is the belief that an entity or category has an underlying essence that determines its identity. Essentialist intuitions are common in laypeople's thinking about biological kinds and some social categories. In particular, essentialist beliefs about social groups have been shown to have a variety of problematic implications, contributing to social stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. This article reviews concepts and empirical studies on essentialism.
