Abstract
The somewhat negative view of school management at the end of the twentieth century has given way to a more upbeat and positive account, reflecting a tighter integration of management and learning. Large-scale studies or meta-analyses of developments in different countries have led to a more nuanced approach to school management especially in high-performing systems. Significant challenges lie ahead in school management for innovation, a capacity for futures thinking, and preparation and ongoing professional development.
