Education in the Arts | Oxford University Press | Published : 2017

Abstract

In this chapter Kate Donelan canvasses the complex issues associated with achieving intercultural understanding – questions of language, cultural sensitivities and appropriation and the theoretical frameworks and arts practices that can cast light on the rocky and changing terrain inhabited by new-generation ‘global citizens’. Drawing on the work of key cultural theorists, drama educators and her own ethnographic research, Kate makes explicit the links between the shifting global landscape and the potential for the classroom teacher to assist in the development of intercultural understandings among her students through arts education practices.
