The United Kingdom Musical Futures and informal music pedagogy principles have generated a worldwide interest on a scale not seen previously in classroom music education. This chapter explores informal music pedagogy and Musical Futures from an historical perspective. We map broad movements related to classroom music education across the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia over the last 50 years, and describe the three broad themes that emerged. In light of these movements, we examine the adoption of Musical Futures, and in particular, its professional learning model via a small study undertaken in Australia.
