Abstract
This paper is an attempt to answer two basic questions about people engaged in welfare work. Why do they choose this work? Why do they make it political work? These are questions which increasingly need to be answered as a greater number of work opportunities are opened up in the welfare field, and as the practice of welfare work becomes more and more a political act, undertaken within the context of an increased politicization of welfare issues.
