Different communities, speaking different languages, employ different naming systems to describe the phenomena of the mathematics classroom. The International Lexicon Project has documented the lexicons of middle school teachers of mathematics in nine countries. This paper reports on aspects of the naming systems in use by Australian and U.S. middle school mathematics teachers. Members of the research community and groups of practitioners in both countries participated in the process of negotiating their own lexicons, whilst the education community at large assisted in the validation of that lexicon.
