Abstract

‘We are a nation of a fair go. It’s in our DNA’ (Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull, 8 May 2017). A ‘fair go’ is a distinctly Australian expression and ‘The right to a “fair go” is the thing almost all Australians put at the top of their list when it comes to values’ (Gough 2006). A fair go refers to the ability of people, if they have a ‘level playing field’, to work hard and to make something of themselves. Reading innumerable media sources led us to distil the essential features of a level playing field as education, health, rights for workers and housing.
