Children's literacy development begins from the moment they enter a literate society, indeed at the moment of birth. They are surrounded by the elements of a literate culture where caregivers engage in a wide range of literate behaviours, for example, texting messages on phones, checking social media, following recipes, emailing friends and family, reading story books and singing songs. There is a growing recognition that literacy learning takes place during the years before formal schooling begins.
